Requirements

A quiet space where you will be uninterrupted and where you have the facilities to access our live zoom classes. You'll need to be available for the 1.5 hour class time once a week for 4 weeks. The course grows from week to week. It is highly recommended that you attend every class to make the most of the opportunity. To really notice the impact of what you learn we ask that you practice a technique (or techniques) that you've learnt during the course for a minimum of 10 minutes a day for the duration of the course. While not a 'requirement' it is definitely a 'strongly recommended'.

Great question!

We’re going to cover a lot in this course.

To make the most of it I recommend that you do a daily formal practice.

A formal practice:

  • is a minimum of 10 minutes long
  • is where you’re giving a technique your full attention (or very close to)

Formal Practice can be done in Stillness or in Motion.

Practicing in Stillness might look doing it on your own, seated in a quiet room.

Practicing in Motion might look like you’re out walking or on the treadmill at the gym.

As long it’s a minimum of 10 minutes and you’re focused on the technique that’s a formal practice.

10 minutes is all it takes for you to begin to access the benefits of practice. Getting your own experiential understanding of the content of the course will be its own form of motivation and learning.

Given how much Mindfulness seems to be a buzz word these days you could be forgiven for thinking so.  The downside of this is that there are offerings ‘out there’ with little or no link to research supported practices. Mindfulness skills are trainable (like physical skills at a gym) and support unconditional happiness and transformative personal change. The techniques and strategies are inspired by practices which stretch back many hundreds of years. Over the last 4 decades the emergence of contemplative neuroscience has focused on the effects and benefits of these practices. The skills of Mindfulness are not just ‘the latest thing’ but a tried and rigorously tested tool that is here to stay for the benefit of anyone who is interested to give it a try.

The 3 core attention of skills of mindfulness are common to contemplative practices across traditions and time.

The Unified Mindfulness System is a secular framework which focuses on the development of those attention skills. Paying attention doesn’t belong to any religion. If you are religious you might use your attention skills in ways that support your exploration of your religion. If you are not religious Mindfulness Meditation can support your life and happiness goals in whatever ways interest you most.
